Bio

“The task of science is to take out the limits of the knowable, and to center consciousness within them”, like the wise quote of Rudolph Virchow said about science, I think surgery fulfills the dream that I have about medicine as science, because it combines in a superb manner the clinical and surgical aspects of medicine with thoughtfulness and responsibility. It also gives you the opportunity to look after patients throughout the most difficult times in their lives, being not only a doctor, but also a person who they can trust and rely on, with the major responsibility of taking care of them in the most vulnerable situation that a human being can face, disease.

I have always had a special interest in surgery, because of the amazing way it can combine hands on skills, and a sharp mind in order to decide when to operate, and most important when not to operate. All my activities had set my interest in the specialty that could combine my mind and my body in a 100% and could open my mind to create knowledge and share it for the benefit of others, that is surgery for me.

During my professional career, I have had the opportunity to teach medical students approaching medicine for the first time. This experience taught me that the teacher has to be well prepared, because the teacher is an all-time student who when asked a question; he cannot answer I don´t know!, and if he has to say it be humble enough to look for the knowledge. I found teaching one of the most rewarding experiences in my life, and I definitely plan to do it in the future to share my knowledge with the future generations.

For all those reasons, and because I believe in my strength and capacity I am a surgeon.

Yours truly,

Jon Mikel Iñarritu-Castro
