My attractive, brainy, successfully employed, graduate son age 23 had BDD, unbeknownst to me, and he committed suicide. Every day I live the hell of thinking 'why didn't I realise?' Only after his death did I find out he had consulted a plastic surgeon for a virtually invisible 'defect.' His dad talked him out of it, but did not tell me about the conversation. Months later he was dead by his own hand, leaving a second plastic surgery consult unmet. He left a mirror in his backpack at the scene. My heart is permanently broken. Move heaven and earth to get help for your boy. If only I had been able to. Susan, for god’s sake try to get your son some help.
